The Guide to Rocking Good Food

A sandwich to die for

RestaurantsPosted by Mikkel Max Hansen 2007-06-04 21:59:59
Ok, this is really pathetic...I never thought I'd be saying this, but here it is: I make a fantastic sandwich. I know I'm no restaurant and I know that not many will have the opportunity to test and verify my claims... but: I'll give you something else...1 a decription of the pearl2 the recipéAnd I'll do it in one go...Take half a broccoli and separate the tiny bouquet from the harder stuff. Throw out the latter. Broccoli is so tasty when its fried, so that's what you'll do. Fry it hard in olive oil, spingle a little seasalt, pepper and cayenne on top and after a while turn down the heat. Add a little more oil and some good soy sauce and let it soak and fry like a lover on a pan. Already your kitchen smells wonderfull. Now fry chicken dice hard till it's crispy brown. No less will work. I know that chicken sometimes turns soft on you, but don't worry. Just keep frying and you'll get there. season with salt, more pepper and more cayenne, and fry fry fry. Now add half a sliced onion to the broccoli and after some time some garlic. Meanwhile slice mozerella cheese fine and heat a halfed soft baguette in the oven, 220 celsius, about 7 minuttes untill crispy on all sides. Now add a good portion of sweet teryaki-sauce to the chicken letting it soak and fry like a monkey. When all is set add the goodies to the bread and savour. It is absolutely...Loooooooooooooooovely

A deli morning bite

Diners and delisPosted by Mikkel Max Hansen 2007-05-06 11:32:55
NYC/USA

One of the things that make New York City so damn cool are the many little delis that live nup to their names without being fancy-ass at all. I doubt that you'll run into a bad deli, but I can tell you of a good one by Delancy and Essex. You'll know of the place if you've been to the nighly parties at Ludlow. We're talking Lower East Side, and like most of the NYC places, it's for real.

I'm not talkning about the small one, rather the one on the corner. It's crazy good. Try the egg in a roll for a dollar 25. Simple, yet so good, filling, cheap like yeah, fresh and true. Really, I shouldn't tell you what to get, since all looks damn good and I've only tried four different things. The gurkens and sausages are really something though, and so is the filet steak sandwich.

This is NYC, it's honest, hardworking, pleasant, fresh and tasty. I love it! And so will you...

The best burger in the world!

RestaurantsPosted by Mikkel Max Hansen 2007-04-29 22:28:55
Reykjavik/Iceland

Icelandic/American

It's in the blood - the mysterious lust for a juicy burger. Every single soul on this hungry planet must know of what I'm talking. You picture the burger, it becomes an obsession, the taste is wonderful, rich, beautiful. But it's all in your head. The actual burger that you get and hold with your physical fingers - be it from the nasty MacDonaldswhateverthey'recalled or a tiptop restaurant - does not live up to your expectations. You want it to, and sometimes you're that close to fooling yourself into saying that you've struck burger-gold, but no no no. A bite later and you know that you were wrong.

Well, that is untill you've gone to Iceland.

After a sweet night in the hands of the capital, you can't yearn for much more than an ice cold coke and a burger with fries. So, having read this, you'll go to Vítabar not far from the big church on top of the hill - Hallgrimskirkja. The locals say Svítabar because the place is damp from burgermaking. And what burgers they make, oh me oh my.

This is honestly the only burger in the world that doesn't just live up to your dreams but excedes them. Go for the bluecheeseburger as it is heaven. Writing this I remember the juices, the firmness, the looks. Nothing fancy like funky buns or lettuce or new age monkey-business. Plain, and yet so... eh... heavenly. I've tried to make a copy back home, but nothing beats the taste of Icelandic beef (which is true about their lamb as well) and the routine of the nice lady working behind the scenes in the bar. Writing this I want to go to Iceland now. Were I extremely rich I wouldn't hesitate. Screw global warming and take the first plane to the land of lava to get the best damn burger in the world.

I'll find photos a.s.a.p.

Great Jones Café

The world's best place...

... and don't tell anyone! I've visited Great Jones many times now, and every time I've walked out with the wish to stay just a little longer. The restaurant is tres petite, with a very friendly atmosphere and a cool jukebox.First of all, the bar make absolutely fantastic drinks. Try the vodka lemonade which is plentiful and soothing. Or the bloody mary, which is perfectly spiced up with hoarseraddish and chili, rich tomato juice and lemon. The 'try a drink' is really not an option as you can be quite certain that you'll have to wait a long time to get an available table from the busy waitress. But when you get one - after 4 drinks - dig your way into the menu.I've tried many of their dishes - each better than the other. It would be silly to mention all, but you HAVE to try the catfish with sweet potato fries, which is the best I've ever had. Super-spicy, crisp, sweet, rich, light tasty tasty tasty...and the little bowls of salad, the chili, the drinks, the burgers...YUM!Really, anything is a scoop at the Great Jones. But did I mention the brunch? No I did not. Simply because I don't want you to go take up MY seat!
Go to the GJC site.
